The Mather Hospital Transitional Year Program is designed to provide a well-balanced program of graduate medical education in a variety of disciplines, in order to prepare residents for entry into a subsequent program that requires a prerequisite clinical year. The program may also provide clinical education for those medical school graduates who: will serve in public health organizations; serve on active duty in the military as general medical officers or primary flight/undersea medicine physicians; or who desire or need to acquire at least one year of fundamental clinical education before entering administrative medicine or non-clinical research.
A range of elective opportunities are available at both Northwell Health and Mather Hospitals under the supervision of dedicated faculty. Residents will have access to a state-of-the-art Clinical Skills (Simulation) Center, complete with high-fidelity mannequins and online access to entire Zucker School of Medicine/Northwell Health electronic library. This design will provide a strong clinical foundation in a community-focused environment.
While the program has no specific requirement of a scholarly project, those who are interested in pursuing a research project will be assisted by Dr. Alan Kaell, Mather Hospital’s Director of Research, and by Dr. Greg Haggerty, Graduate Research Educator, with topic development, planning, IRB application and processing, data gathering, analysis and drafting. They will pair them with appropriate research mentors and facilitate those relationships.
Primary rotations include six months of fundamental clinical skills training distributed among the four following areas:
- Ambulatory Internal Medicine
- CCU/Step Down
- General Medicine
- ICU
Primary rotations also include:
- Emergency Medicine
- Radiology
- General Surgery/ Colorectal Surgery
