Mather earned the highest five-star rating for 2023 and 2024 from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for outcomes, patient experience, and process. Just 15 percent of the 4,654 star-rated hospitals nationwide earned five-star status.

This achievement puts Mather in the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance and reflects the hospital’s commitment to exceptional patient care. Mather Hospital was one of eight Northwell hospitals named by Newsweek on its list of America’s Best-in-State Hospitals 2025.
The hospital was recognized as a 2024 Pulmonary Care Excellence Award™ recipient for the ninth straight year by Healthgrades.
Mather was rated high-performing in four adult specialties and two procedures and conditions by U.S News & World Report’s 2023-2024 Best Hospitals rankings – gastroenterology & GI surgery; geriatrics; orthopedics; pulmonology & lung surgery; heart failure; and kidney failure.
Healthgrades in October 2024 named Mather one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Pulmonary Care and Coronary Intervention. It also awarded Mather four Specialty Excellence Awards, placing the hospital among the nation’s top 10% for Critical Care, Gastrointestinal Care, Coronary Intervention and Pulmonary Care; Five-Star ratings for seven services: coronary intervention procedures and the treatment of heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, GI Bleed, respiratory failure, and sepsis; and a Five-Star Distinction in outpatient total knee replacement.
In 2023 we received our third Magnet® Recognized Hospital designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a prestigious recognition of quality, patient and staff satisfaction, and outcomes earned by only 604 hospitals worldwide. The designation reflects Mather’s reputation for its caring nursing staff.
We earned our 20th top “A” grade for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group in the spring 2024 ratings, the most of any hospital in Suffolk County. Leapfrog is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in the quality and safety of American health care.
Mather consistently ranks among the top Long Island hospitals for overall recommended care and patient satisfaction, according to the HCAHPS patient survey.
The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses awarded a gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence to Mather Hospital’s Critical Care team. This is the highest level of recognition that Critical Care services can achieve for this award.
Mather Hospital was one of only 29 hospitals nationwide to receive the Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award for demonstrating exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy, and research.
The American Heart Association awarded Mather the Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke GOLD PLUS with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll for our commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.
Mather Hospital has achieved the Level 1 Gold designation for Emergency Department geriatric care from the American College of Emergency Physicians, the only hospital in Suffolk County to achieve this status. This recognizes that our ED is focused on the highest standards of care for our community’s older adults.
